Durga Ashtami is one of the auspicious sacred days celebrated by devotees of Goddess Durga. Devotees and worshippers celebrate Masik Durga Ashtami on the Ashtami tithi of each month or the eighth day of the month as per the Hindu calendar. On this day, weapons carried by the goddess Durga are worshipped. This ritual is popularly known as “Astra Puja.”

Significance
The term “Ashtami” is a Sanskrit word that means eight days and “Durga” means undefeatable. Thus, Durga Ashtami denotes as per sacred Hindu scriptures that Goddess Durga was the one who killed Mahishasura and gained victory. The most powerful and fearful form of Goddess Durga is Goddess Bhadrakali. As per Hindu mythology, devotees who observe this day with full dedication will be blessed with good fortune and pleasure.
Rituals Followed
On the auspicious day of Durga Ashtami, devotees wake up early, take a bath, and then collect dhoop, Chandan, and flowers as offerings to the goddess. Later in the day, Kumari Puja is done by some households where girls between six to twelve years of age are revered and offered delicacies. Moreover, on this day a unique delicacy, “Naivedyam” is also offered to Durga Maa.
Masik Durga Ashtami Vrat’s most important part is fasting. People who refrain from drinking or eating anything on this day are said to get blessings from Mata Durga. Both women and men keep fast on this day to seek spiritual benefits. On this day, consumption of non-vegetarian food and alcohol is forbidden.
