International Human Solidarity Day is celebrated on 20 December. The United Nations recognized the day. It is observed to celebrate unity in diversity as well as urge everyone to take part and bring change in society to remove poverty from the world.
Back in 2005, on 22 December, the General Assembly by resolution 60/209 identified solidarity as a universal value and fundamental right. It highlights the relationship between people during the twenty-first century which is why 20 December was recognised as International Human Solidarity Day every year.
World Solidarity Fund was established under the General Assembly by resolution 57/265 on 20 December 2005. Later it was set as the trust of the United Nations Development Programme in 2003. The main aim behind this is to remove poverty from the world and encourage social and human development in under-developed and developing countries where there are a high number of poor people.
According to the United Nations, the growing challenges of inequality and globalization, and the strengthening of international solidarity is important. Thus, the spirit of sharing to fight poverty and every year prompting solidarity plays a huge role in bringing change in society. Furthermore, the day also promotes human rights, peace, and social and economic development.
Many notable organizations including the United Nations realized that solidarity is essential to eradicate the problems of poverty and promotes cultural, economic, social, and humanitarian character.
International Human Solidarity Day 2023 Theme
This year i.e 2023 the theme will be Advocate for Change: Raise awareness about important global issues and advocate for policies that promote social justice, equality, and human rights.
