Man charged with assaulting volunteer trying to stop LCBO theft
A man faces charges after a 75-year-old volunteer collecting donations for the Red Cross was hurt trying to stop a liquor store theft, Sarnia police say.
The volunteer, who tried to stop a man leaving the Quinn Street LCBO with two bottles of alcohol around 2:30 p.m. Saturday, was pushed and tripped, fell and hit his head, police said on the weekend. The volunteer was taken to hospital, where he received several staples, police said.
Police released surveillance photos and asked for the public’s help identifying a suspect, described as a slim white male wearing red and black pants, a black coat with a red hood, black face covering and a New York Yankees baseball hat, police said on the weekend.
In an update issued Monday, police said they received a number of tips from the public and were able to identify a suspect.
A 26-year-old Sarnia man is charged with aggravated assault, theft worth less than $5,000, and wearing a disguise with the intent to commit an offence.
