Winter solstice 2023 is ringing the bells and approaching. The significance of the day, winter solstice is that it is the day having the shortest day and longest night in the Northern Hemisphere. In 2023, the Winter Solstice falls on December 22, Friday. This day sets the onset of astronomical winter. However, in the Southern Hemisphere, it is called as summer solstice which marks the onset of the summer.
Winter solstice is that particular moment in which the Earth is tilted at approximately 23.4 degrees and is farther from the sun than any other day of the year. On this day, the North Pole is at an angle that is placed at the farthest and maximum distance in the solar system, away from the sun. Thus, sunlight falls very lightly on the Northern hemisphere on the day, marking it the shortest day of the year.
It is noted that the winter solstice is thought of as an event that stays or is observed for an entire day. However, this is not the case. Winter Solstice lasts for a moment only. Also according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the Winter Solstice is just an event of a moment. The Almanac denotes, “Specifically, it’s the exact moment when a hemisphere is tilted as far away from the sun as possible.”
Winter Solstice Date
This year in 2023, as per Greenwich Mean Time, on December 22 at 3.27 am, winter solstice will occur. However, as per Indian Standard Time, Indians can witness the winter solstice at 8:57 am on December 22, 2023, Friday. Across the earth, the winter solstice occurs at the exact time everywhere. However, the date of occurrence of winter solstice always varies every year. Usually, this day falls between December 20-23. However, the most common dates of occurrence of the winter solstice are December 21st and 22nd.
After the winter solstice, the days start to expand and night starts to contract. Thus, the daylight time slowly becomes longer. Various people also think that winter solstice having the longest night and shortest day might be the coldest day of the year, however, it is not a matter at all. It may seem strange, but winter solstice is not the coldest day of the entire year.
