Blue Christmas is a Western Christian practice which is observed on 21 December. It is a celebration of the longest night of the year also known as Winter Solstice. It gives emotional support to families and friends who are sad and grieving in such times i.e. holiday season. The day gives them joy and a source of happiness.
Blue Christmas is an alternative to more conventional gatherings, the Blue Christmas Service. It goes back to 1990 when people started offering more reflective worship services. The prayers were for people who are sad and dealing with some kind of loss. As time went on, the day transformed into a new meaning.
In 2016, Kevin Dunn, a Simpsonville, South Carolina resident started a movement to celebrate the day to honour the sacrifices made by law enforcement personnel to keep people safe during the holiday season. Additionally, a police officer also lost his life during Christmas time making the day even more important.
Campaigns are made to encourage the public to support law enforcement personnel and “honour the memories of those officers who have given their lives in the line of duty.”
The significance of Blue Holiday in modern and traditional versions is quite the same meaning we should be more caring and compassionate towards each other. The festival gives us a chance to support people who are alone and sad during the festive season.
Plus, the new way to show respect and gratitude towards law enforcement for keeping us safe is also a great way to celebrate Blue Christmas.
