This holiday commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple which is located in Jerusalem. It happened after the “Maccabean revolt against the Syrian-Greek army.” Hanukkah is celebrated for eight long days and nights which begins from sunset. The main motive behind commemorating the festival is the rededication of the Holy Temple.

Rituals and Traditions of Hanukkah

On Hanukkah, the menorah is lit. In the past few years, other Hanukkah commemorations have also gathered popularity. On this occasion, during Hanukkah, Jewish families March ahead to give out gifts and presents.

Usually, one gift is given on each night of the entire eight days of celebration. The most common way to commemorate Hanukkah is by playing a game of dreidel. In this game, a top is spun and inscribed with Hebrew letters. Traditional Hanukkah dishes are also cooked during the holiday, like a donut filled with strawberry jelly, Sufganiyot, and potato latkes.
