International Migrants Day is celebrated on 18 December every year. With the rise of population and globalization, many people tend to move to different parts of the world thus increasing the number of people who have the desire as well as the capacity to move to different locations. A new era has been created with challenges and new opportunities in society.
As per the latest reports, in today’s world, the number of people living in a country is much higher than those born. According to the latest report by the UN, there has been a huge rise in the number of migrants at a global level. In 2010 it was 51 million but in 2019 it reached 272 million.
Even the number of international migrants has also risen to 2.8% as compared to 2.3% in 1980. Many migrants go to different countries by choice when it comes to job necessities while others move to protect themselves from the danger they face in their home country.
According to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, “On this International Migrants Day, let us seize the opportunity of the recovery from the pandemic to implement the Global Compact for Sale, Orderly, and Regular Migration, reimage human mobility, enable migrants to reignite economies at home and abroad and build more inclusive and resilient societies”.
Every year a new theme is announced. This year i.e. 2023 the theme will be “Promoting Safe Migration”. It aims to highlight the marginalization and vulnerability migrants often experience while moving to a new country or say community.
