Dhanu Sankranti or Dhanu Sankraman is an auspicious festival that is celebrated when the Sun enters the Dhanu Rashi, which is the house of Sagittarius. In Odisha, the festival is celebrated with great pomp and joy. The day is commemorated by conducting a special puja and offering to Lord Jagannath.
On this day, the Sun God is also worshipped. The onset of Dhanu Sankranti is synonymous with the beginning of the ninth month, as per the Hindu calendar. The day remains in celebration from Pausha Shukla Shasthi to Pausha Purnima.
Significance of Dhanu Sankranti
On this day, along with Lord Jagganath, the Sun God is also worshipped. On this day, devotees take baths in the Godavari, Yamuna, and Ganga rivers. In Odisha, Pausha Maas is regarded as a plentiful month. A grand event is organised and people are invited to celebrate together when the harvesting season is over.
Lord Jagannath is offered with a delicacy prepared from sweetened rice flakes, called Dhanu Muan. On this day Street plays are also performed in which the life incidents of Lord Jagannath and Lord Krishna are played. Plays are executed by local and indigenous people with great enthusiasm. In this period Dhanu Yatra is also organised.
Rituals and Celebration
Especially in Odisha, an eastern state of India, on the auspicious occasion of Dhanu Sankranti, Lord Jagannath along with Lord Sun is worshipped. When the sun rises, the Sun god is venerated with flowers and water in the dawn. People seek blessings, happiness, fortune, and a healthy life.
During the celebrations sweetened rice flakes are made a special Prasad and offered to Lord Jagannath. Devotees also visit Shri Jagannath temple Sun temple on this day to pay tribute and respect. On this day offering a donation as a charity and performing ancestral poojas are a part of observance.
