Indian citizens will celebrate another major festival a few days after Diwali, which is popularly known as Chhath. Chhath Puja is observed with extra fervor in West Bengal, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. In the month of Kartika, Chhat Puja falls on the sixth day. The Chhat Puja will be celebrated for four days.
Devotees have geared up for a four-day festival that is around the corner. Chhat Puja is celebrated by people with much pomp and show. This celebration is also popularly known as Dala Chhath, Pratihar, Dala Puja, Chhath Parv, Chhathi, Chhath, Surya Shashti, and many more. The celebration of Chhat Puja is dedicated to the Surya Bhagavan or Sun God, who is worshipped by Hindus as Lord Surya. Lord Surya is the God of life force and energy.
During Chhat, the women keep fasts for the progress, prosperity, and well-being of their children and family to Chhathi Maiya and Lord Surya. They start their worship rituals by offering Arghya to Chhathi Maiya and Sun God after bathing. This festival is prevalent in Nepal and certain states of India like Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Bihar.
Date
In 2023, the Chhath Puja festival will kick-start on November 17 (Friday). The four-day festival will continue till November 20, 2023.
Celebrations
On the four-day-long Chhat Puja, the women keep rigorous fast for 36 long hours. They keep fasts to gain blessings from Chhathi Maiya and Lord Surya. Nahay Khay is the first day of Chhat. On this day, women dwell on a single meal, devotees take a bath in the River Ganga and purify themselves and prasad is prepared by devotees for offering to Lord Surya.
Kharna and Chhath Puja are on the second and third days respectively. On this day female devotees observe rigorous nirjala vrat. The fourth day is called Usha Arghya on which day Arghya is offered to the rising sun. They break their fast of 36 hours by offering water to Lord Surya standing in the water.
