History
Daman and Diu, Goa Liberation Day is celebrated every year on December 19. This year in 2023 it will be commemorated with great pomp and show on Tuesday, December 19, 2023. In 1961, on this particular day, Goa was finally captured by the Indian Army. Goa was previously under Portuguese rule for approximately 451 long years. A small bunch of people from Goa participated in Satyagraha in the 1940s.
Goa was religiously and culturally different from the rest of the country. Therefore, even after the country gained independence in 1947, the Portuguese refused to leave Goa. When the Indian Government tried to carry on diplomatic discussions with the Portuguese people, it found that they were onto the independent princely states. Thus, negotiations failed. The then Government of India annexed Goa with the help of the military.
