Devutthana Ekadashi also known as Prabodhini Ekadashi and Dev Uthani Ekadashi is a sacred festival observed in the Hindu community. It is usually celebrated during the month of Kartik in Shukla Paksha (the waxing phase of the moon) meaning it is celebrated in November or October.
Initially, it was narrated by Lord Brahma to Narada. The whole story was perfectly explained in the Skanda Purana’. The festival has great significance for Hindus as it marks the beginning time of the wedding season. After this, good things commenced like marriage, grah pravesh and starting a new business.
Puja is performed by devotees to seek Lord Visnu’s blessings and attain salvation or ‘moksha’. If anyone keeps fast and performs puja on this day go straight to ‘Vaikunth’ after death, according to the Hindu belief.
The Ekadashi marks the conclusion of the Chaturmas (four months of monsoon). Also, the phase of four months before Dev Uthani Ekadashi is the period when Lord Vishnu is sleeping as per the belief.
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu sleeps on the eve of Shayani Ekadashi in the Ashada month during Shukla Paksha. He then directly wakes up on the eve of Devutthana Ekadashi.
Before the festival, the 4 months are regarded as the unfavourable time when good things or any auspicious activity is avoided. It is said that on this day, Lord Vishnu woke up from Maha-Nindra.
After killing the demon he went to a long sleep with no disturbance so all kinds of good things were avoided during this time. To perform the puja, devotees wake up before sunrise, bathe and offer Lord Vishnu food and fruits. Bhakti songs and bhajans are performed throughout the day.
