As the country’s famous Chhath Puja begins, people from UP and Bihar march towards their hometown on November 17 with Nahay Khay, which is the initial ritual of the puja. Chhat Puja is a four-day long festival that is celebrated predominantly in northern India in the states of UP, Jharkhand, Bihar, and parts of West Bengal. Women keep a long fast for 36 hours and eat one meal a day.
The festival is dedicated to Chhathi Maiyya, who is the daughter of Lord Brahma and sister of Sun God as per Indian mythology. However, the Sun God is also prayed on this day with immense devotion. For the people belonging to UP and Bihar, Chhath Puja is not only a festival but rather an emotion as well.
Date
Usually, one woman in the entire house observes the Chhath Puja for the well-being of her entire family, especially children. To gain blessings of Chhathi Maiyya and Lord Sun, vratis perform a set of nirjala fasting. In the Hindu month of Kartik, on the sixth day of Shukla Paksha, Chhath Puja is celebrated usually six days after Diwali.
This year in 2023, the celebration of Chhath Puja begins on November 17 and will end on November 20. Offering water to the rising sun and setting sun, which is called Arghya will be given on November 20 and November 19 respectively.
Chhath Puja Significance and Celebration
On this festival, Chhat Puja, women go 36 hours without eating anything. They strive on rigorous fasts to observe Chhath Puja. They pray to Lord Surya and Chhati Maiya for the well-being of their family and children in mind. The preparation for Chhat Puja begins days before the real puja.
Preparation includes buying new clothes for the family, soops, puja samagri & prasad items, and cleaning houses. The celebration of Chhath can be traced back to the rituals of Usha arghya and Sandhya, to the Vedic era, and mentions in Rigveda. It is also believed that the initiation of Chhat Puja took place by Rishis who abstain from eating anything and fast for days together.
