Bhai Dooj is one of the most loving and cherished festivals in the Hindu community. It celebrates the bond between sisters and brothers. The day is celebrated on the 2nd day after Diwali. This would make the 5th day in the month of Kartika as per the Hindu calendar. It is observed on the new moon day and falls in November and October according to the lunar calendar.
According to Hindu mythology and beliefs, Lord Krishna went to meet his sister Subhadra after defeating the army of Narakasura. So his sister welcomed him with sweets and flowers and put a red tilak on his forehead. The festival is celebrated with full dedication and enthusiasm across the nation every year.
There are many folklore and ancient stories related to the festival. Another is about Yama, the God of Death. He visited Yamuna, his sister. She welcomed him with sweets and tilak. Seeing the welcome he got, he decided that anyone who received sweet and tilak from his sister then he would be blessed with a long life.
This year 2023 it will be celebrated on 15th November. The celebration of unconditional love between brothers and sisters. Siblings love to shower each other with gifts and sweets. A perfect time to show how much your siblings mean to you. Tilak on the forehead signifies protection from evil and negativity and blesses the brother with a long life.
The day is celebrated in many ways across India. In Maharashtra, it is celebrated as Bhau Beej while in West Bengal it is celebrated as Bhai Phota.
